Home Insights CMA CGM Implements Global Peak Season Surcharges

July 08, 2024

CMA CGM has announced the introduction of peak season surcharges (PSS) worldwide, effective August 1, 2024. These surcharges are set to affect major trade routes, including Asia to North America, Europe to South America, and intra-Asia lanes.

The surcharges are intended to cover increased operational costs during the peak shipping season. For example, the PSS from Asia to North America will be $600 per TEU (twenty-foot equivalent unit) and $1,200 per FEU (forty-foot equivalent unit). For shipments from Europe to South America, the surcharge will be $300 per TEU and $600 per FEU.

CMA CGM highlights that these measures are necessary to maintain service quality and reliability during periods of high demand. Customers are encouraged to factor in these additional costs when planning their shipments during the peak season.

What does this windfall mean for investors?

This windfall of updated surcharges means that investors can expect higher shipping costs during peak seasons. It also signifies increased demand and potential for higher returns.
